Dental Crowns
Explained

Dental crowns, also known as caps, are dental restorations that cover a tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and improve its appearance. Crowns are often used when a tooth is severely damaged, cracked, or weakened, and other restorative options like fillings are not sufficient.

The process of getting a dental crown typically involves two visits to the dentist. During the first visit, the dentist will prepare the tooth by removing a layer of enamel to make room for the crown. An impression of the tooth will then be taken and sent to a dental laboratory where the crown will be custom-made. A temporary crown may be placed to protect the tooth in the meantime.

Once the permanent crown is ready, the patient will return for the second visit, during which the temporary crown is removed, and the permanent crown is bonded into place using dental cement. The dentist will ensure that the crown fits properly and matches the surrounding teeth in color and shape.

What Exactly Is
Dental Crowns?

There are several types of dental crowns, including:

Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns: These crowns have a metal base for strength with a porcelain coating for a natural appearance. They are durable and can withstand biting and chewing forces well.

All-ceramic or all-porcelain crowns: These crowns are made entirely of ceramic or porcelain material, providing a high level of aesthetics as they closely resemble natural teeth in color and translucency. They are a popular choice for front teeth.

Metal crowns: These crowns are made of gold alloy or other metal materials. They are highly durable and less prone to wear and tear, making them suitable for molars.

Zirconia crowns: Zirconia is a strong and durable ceramic material that can be used to create crowns that are both aesthetically pleasing and long-lasting.
